As tablets emerge as one of the hottest products in technology, a debate is brewing on whether they will end up hurting the big chip firms that traditionally make the brains for personal computers.
The popularity of tablets was highlighted by Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) most recent results. Unit sales of the iPad outpaced the company’s flagship line of Mac computers in the September quarter–just six months after the device first hit the market.
More tablets are coming, from companies such as Dell Inc. (DELL), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), Samsung, Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) and even Cisco Systems Inc.
