4 trends fueling mobile advertising

There’s no denying the growth of mobile advertising. eMarketer has increased its forecasted ad spend for 2012 to $2.6 billion, an increase of 80% over 2011. Mojiva’s mobile ad network manages about 45 60 billion ad impressions a month. Another ad network, InMobi, sayssmartphone impressions on its global network grew 488% in 2011.

Apple Goes Corporate – The iPad is letting Apple succeed at business without really trying

Apple Inc., without much effort on its part, is making rapid headway in selling to corporations.

After years of being the also-ran to Microsoft Corp. in the workplace, Apple has seen its iPad become a standard business tool. According to an IDG Connect survey, 51 percent of managers with iPads say they “always” use the device at work, and another 40 percent sometimes do. Seventy-nine percent of the respondents use the iPad for business when outside the office.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The worldwide mobile phone market grew 6.1% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2011 (4Q11), as the feature phone market declined faster than anticipated, dragging market growth down to its lowest point in over two years. According to the International Data Corporation (IDCWorldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 427.4 million units in 4Q11 compared to 402.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010. The 6.1% year-over-year growth was higher than IDC’s forecast of 4.4% for the quarter, but weaker than the 9.3% growth in 3Q11.

iPad for Business Survey 2012

IDG Connect’s global telephone survey has found that 51% of IT decision-makers (67% in North America) always use their iPad at work and 40% sometimes.  The more than 200 respondents last fall revealed that they rely more on iPads for consumption rather than creation of content and see iPads as a supplement to their work PCs.  While some consumer research shows iPads are mostly used for recreation, only 31% of IT pros use them regularly for entertainment.

Free Apps Win Out Over Paid Downloads – In 2011, 96% of smartphone apps were downloaded for free

Today’s smartphone users are increasingly unenthusiastic about paying for mobile applications. Consumers are closing their wallets at app stores, preferring free app downloads instead. IHS Screen Digest estimated that 96% of all smartphone apps were downloaded for free in 2011.

iPad Usage Varies Between Consumer and IT/Business Professionals

73 percent of professionals use their iPads for news consumption.
As expected, the iPad (now used by 60 million worldwide) is directly affecting how consumers are buying and digesting media. However, in a recent study released by IDG Connect, data shows that iPad usage varies with the audience demographic. While the tablet is plugged as a “lean back” device by many in the magazine industry, the study shows that tablet use by IT and business professionals is different than the average tablet owner.
