Gartner Press Release

Analysts Discuss Mobile Device Management at Gartner IT Infrastructure & Operations Management Summit 2012, June 5-7, in Orlando and June 12-13 in Frankfurt, Germany Mobile device management (MDM) has become a crucial discipline for IT departments, given the increasing number of smartphones and media tablets used within organizations, according to Gartner, Inc.

“The era of fully supporting company-owned devices is giving way to an era of managed diversity in which tiered support for employee-owned, consumer-class devices is the norm,” said Terrence Cosgrove, research director at Gartner. “With the unabated growth of consumerization, IT leaders need to implement MDM to manage corporate- and employee-owned devices, and assign responsibilities inside IT departments for the service, application and security of all these devices.”

Advertiser interest in purchasing real-time, impression-level inventory has led to explosive growth in ad spending on real-time bidding (RTB) inventory. Media-buying firm Accordant Media found worldwide real-time bidding inventory for banner and video ads across online and mobile placements grew 120% in Q1 2012. Though some countries saw growth rates for RTB ad inventory impressions grow more than 600%, the US still accounted for the greatest share (47%) of all RTB-based inventory.

Gigaom

If I had to sum up the themes for smartphones in 2011, I’d likely point to dual-core chips, front and back cameras and high-definition video capture. This year is already shaping up to improve on those features as we now have quad-core phones hitting the market bringing improved multitasking and better performance without sacrificing battery life. This year is when 4G will become the norm in a phone as well. But what about the future?
New chips, sensors and potent graphics processors for more immersive gaming are likely on tap as software applications follow the hardware advances. Symphony Teleca gathered up various data points and technologies in this infographic that helps explain what features to expect.

IDC Press Release

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – A steep drop in shipments of Android-based tablets offset a strong quarter from Apple and caused the media tablet market to miss projections for the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12), according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker. Total worldwide media tablet shipments for the quarter reached 17.4 million units in 1Q12, 1.2 million units below IDC’s projection for the quarter. While IDC predicted a sharp seasonal slowdown of -34% from the previous quarter’s record-breaking 28.2 million units, the actual decline was slightly steeper at -38.4%. The total still represents a robust year-over-year growth rate of 120%, up from 7.9 million units in the first quarter of 2011.

Armed with fast, high-powered smartphones, a new class of consumers, 100 million strong and growing, is rerouting the path to purchase and redefining cultural norms in the US. Members of the “smartphone class” stand apart from other Americans in the way they shop, communicate, consume media—even how they use their spare time. Its members define themselves by their connectedness and their sense of empowerment through unfettered access to real-time information.

IDC Press Release

FRAMINGHAM – The worldwide mobile phone market declined 1.5% year over year in the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12), as Samsung ousted longtime leader Nokia to become the world’s top mobile phone vendor. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 398.4 million units in 1Q12 compared to 404.3 million units in the first quarter of 2011.

Nokia has been the global market leader in total mobile phone shipments since the inception of IDC’s Mobile Phone Tracker in 2004. Samsung’s ascension to the market’s top spot is largely a reflection of its gains in the smartphone market over the past two years. “The halcyon days of rapid growth in the smartphone market have been good to Samsung,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker program. “Samsung has used its established relationships with carriers in a mix of economically diverse markets to gain share organically and at the expense of former high fliers such as Nokia.”

MediaPost

Return Path projects that mobile will overtake Webmail and the desktop PC to become the leading platform for e-mail by year’s end. Email readership on mobile devices accounts for 30% of all opens, up from 10% a few years ago, according to a new study by the email certification and reputation monitoring company,

Return Path estimates that proportion will reach about 35% by June, eclipsing Webmail services like Yahoo Mail, Hotmail and Gmail, and roughly equaling email opens on desktop clients like Outlook by mid-year. “What we’ve seen over the past year and a half is that mobile is really eating away at the share of Webmail views,” said Tom Sather, senior director of email research at Return Path. (A Webmail service accessed within a phone’s native email program would be counted as a mobile view in the study.)
