Mobile video now accounts for half of all mobile traffic; and on some networks, that number is as high as 69 percent — a testament to the rise of smartphones and tablets as the mobile devices of choice for consumers, and their growing interest in using these devices to do a lot more than just make phone calls.

In fact, smartphone users said that internet access was more indispensable than calling (19.9%) and texting (18.2%). After those three leading functions, there was a large dropoff to the next most indispensable functions, email (8.2%), GPS/maps (5.5%), Facebook (3.1%), and apps (general – 2.7%). 1.3% of respondents said that games, Google, and music were their single most important smartphone functions.

Time Spent In Mobile Far Outpaces Ad Spending

Web publishers have long lamented the lack of ad spending online in relation to the amount of time spent online. Now Flurry is making the same case for mobile. In a new study, the mobile advertising and analytics firm says mobile is the most imbalanced medium when it comes to ad spending versus time spent, at 1% compared to 23%. That makes the split of ad spending and time spent on the desktop Web — at 16% versus 22% — look a lot better.

Apple Became Top Smartphone Vendor in Fourth Quarter of 2011 and in 2011 as a Whole

Worldwide smartphone sales to end users soared to 149 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, a 47.3 per cent increase from the fourth quarter of 2010, according to Gartner, Inc. Total smartphone sales in 2011 reached 472 million units and accounted for 31 percent of all mobile devices sales, up 58 percent from 2010.

Google: Mobile Devices Influence Purchases

New findings from Google suggest that consumers are using smartphones, tablets and desktop computers throughout the purchase process. Based on research conducted with Ipsos, Google found that people use smartphones in particular at different points as they move toward a purchase.

Nearly half (46%), for instance, said they researched an item on their smartphone before going to a store buy it. And 37% researched an item on their phone before buying it online. Four in 10 people who use their mobile phones to shop said they had made a purchase through the device itself.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.  – The worldwide smartphone market grew 54.7% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2011 (4Q11), as Apple unleashed its iPhone 4S on an eager marketplace. According to the International Data Corporation (IDCWorldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 157.8 million units in 4Q11 compared to 102.0 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010. The 54.7% year-over-year growth was higher than IDC’s forecast of 40.0% for the quarter, and higher than the 49.2% growth in 3Q11.

Apps, QR Codes To Lead Marketers’ Mobile Investment In 2012

Marketing budgets are indeed following the hype and the eyeballs in 2012 as a clear majority of both marketers and agencies tell eConsultancy they are increasing their spend on core mobile channels this year. In its survey of 500 companies and agencies (in partnership with Experian Marketing Services), eConsultancy found that 57% of company marketers plan to invest in mobile apps in 2012, and 48% in QR code programs.

There’s no denying the growth of mobile advertising. eMarketer has increased its forecasted ad spend for 2012 to $2.6 billion, an increase of 80% over 2011. Mojiva’s mobile ad network manages about 45 60 billion ad impressions a month. Another ad network, InMobi, sayssmartphone impressions on its global network grew 488% in 2011.
