Nothing in a computer built into a TV makes it less attackable than a PC. Internet-connected TVs have IP addresses, always-on network interfaces, CPUs, storage, memory, and operating systems — the details that have offered hackers a bounty of attack choices for the last three decades.

Gartner Says Worldwide PC Shipments Grew 1.9 Percent in First Quarter of 2012

EMEA PC Market Outgrew Worldwide PC Market in First Quarter 2012 Thanks to Solid Demand for Professional Pcs

STAMFORD, Conn.— Worldwide PC shipments totaled 89 million units in the first quarter of 2012, a 1.9 percent increase from the first quarter of 2011, when shipments reached 87.3 million units, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. PC Market Returns To Positive Growth, Though Gains Remain Small, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The worldwide PC market saw a slight increase in volume during the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12) compared to the same quarter in 2011, with shipments rising 2.3%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDCWorldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. The results are slightly above IDC’s February projections of a 0.9% year-on-year decline due to hard disk drive (HDD) supply constraints in addition to weak economic conditions, competition from other devices, and uncertainty about Windows 8.

AOL to license patents to Microsoft in over $1B deal – AOL will continue to hold a significant patent portfolio of over 300 patents

IDG News Service - AOL has entered into a definitive agreement to sell over 800 of its patents and their related patent applications to Microsoft, it said Monday. The sale of patents and a non-exclusive license to its retained patent portfolio will fetch the company over US$1 billion in cash, AOL said.

Ailing AOL has been trying to sell its patents to raise cash, and the deal with Microsoft reflects growing interest from technology companies to acquire patent portfolios both to counter and deter patent litigation.

Mac Malware Outbreak Is Bigger than ‘Conficker’

The Flashback Trojan has compromised an estimated 600,000 plus Macs, making it comparable to the massive Conficker worm bonnet.  An estimated 600,000 or more Macs are currently compromised and part of a massive botnet thanks to the Flashback Trojan horse. To put the size of the threat in some perspective, the Flashback Trojan botnet is even bigger than the massive Conficker botnet…relatively speaking.

US tech market will grow by 7.5% in 2012, 8.3% in 2013

With the US economy showing signs of improvement, the US tech market has been rejuvenated, according to a new US tech market forecast from Forrester, which is forecasting US tech market growth of 7.5% in 2012. This is up from the 6.6% growth projected in November 2011. For 2013, Forrester is forecasting 8.3% growth. Including telecom services, business and government spending on information and communications technology (ICT) will increase by 7.1% in 2012 and 7.4% in 2013.
