Dell leads hardware category while Oracle maintains position as #1 software vendor of choice

FRAMINGHAM, MA – IDC Health Insights today announced the results of the Q1 Leading Indicators in Life Science IT Spending Survey, which polled more than 100 leading life science companies on which life sciences hardware, software and IT services vendors they plan to spend money with during 2012. Of particular interest, the most notable improvement in hardware came from Apple, moving into second place for the first time, with more than 30% of respondents planning to purchase their hardware from Apple. This jump represents a 220% increase in Apple’s survey score since 2009. Apple also made huge strides in the software category, catapulting into second place behind Oracle, up from fifth place last year. The new results underscore the notion that the iPad is helping Apple become a dominant player in the life sciences.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– In the wake of two massive and tragic natural disasters, worldwide hard disk drive (HDD) unit shipments experienced a year-over-year decline of 4.5% in 2011. Although efforts to clean and repair flooded factory buildings and equipment will take most of the first half of 2012, HDD and HDD component production is expected to return to preflood output levels in the second half of this year. According to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC), the HDD industry will record year-over-year unit shipment growth of 7.7% in 2012 and a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.6% for the 2011-2016 forecast period.

Research Indicates that Cloud Increases Short Term Costs for Long Term Gains – IDG Enterprise’s Survey Details Enterprise Cloud Strategy and Vendor Opportunities

Framingham, Mass. – IDG Enterprise—the media company comprising CFOworld, CIO, CIO Executive Council, Computerworld, CSO, DEMO, InfoWorld, ITworld and Network World—releases the results from the 2012 Cloud Computing survey examining cloud computing implementation, usage, investment plans and vendor requirements.

The survey, completed by more than 1,650 IT and security decision-makers from a range of industries, highlights the growth in cloud computing investments, demonstrating the value cloud computing provides to organizations. Respondents state that 34% of their current IT budget is allocated to cloud computing solutions and more than half (63%) expect to increase spending in the next 12 months. On average, organizations will increase cloud computing spending by 16%.

The BI, analytics and PM software market was the second-fastest growing sector in the overall worldwide enterprise software market in 2011.

Gartner Says Worldwide Software-as-a-Service Revenue to Reach $14.5 Billion in 2012

STAMFORD, Conn.—        Worldwide software-as-a-service (SaaS) revenue is forecast to reach $14.5 billion in 2012, a 17.9 percent increase from 2011 revenue of $12.3 billion, according to Gartner, Inc. SaaS-based delivery will experience healthy growth through 2015, when worldwide revenue is projected to reach $22.1 billion.
