10 transformation technologies from the 500

Fortune

A look at the chips, devices, and software that will change the way people will live in the decades to come.

#1 Google Glass

For a product that’s not widely available yet, Google Glass has generated an incredible amount of buzz. It’s not hard to see why. The augmented reality eyeglasses, which project images onto a lense, represent a major step forward in computing, much in the same way the iPad made tablets a common household item. When it arrives later this year, users will be able to snap photos, record video, and otherwise enhance their surroundings, from offering on-the-fly directions superimposed onto the road or reviews for a restaurant someone is looking at.

Samsung Tops In Brand Engagement, Loyalty

MediaPost

Editor’s Note: This week, Marketing Daily brings you exclusive coverage of the Brand Keys 2013 Customer Loyalty Engagement Index (CLEI). Each day, expect a full report on key product/services categories from among the 54 surveyed for this year’s study, including automotive, electronics, retail and technology. This second installment covers electronics, telecommunications and entertainment.

Move over, Apple — there’s a new brand dominating loyalty in the world of consumer electronics.

Samsung, which has scored well in previous years, is now the leader in most of the categories in which it competes (as measured by Brand Keys’ 2013 Consumer Loyalty Engagement Index). The Korean electronics giant comes out on top of the laptop computer (tied with Apple), flat-screen TV and smartphone categories, and was number two among home printers and tablets.

“This is a big turnaround,” Robert Passikoff, Brand Keys founder and president, tells Marketing Daily. “Samsung was always strong, but this is a bit of a switchover. It was a surprise. I guess it shouldn’t have been. I’ve been watching their advertising, and I thought it was really good.”

New numbers show: Microsoft moves more media than you might think

Paidcontent

Everyone was focused on the fact that consumers still buy plenty of DVDs and Blu-ray discs when the NPD Group published its 2012 Home Video Data report this week. It’s true: 61 percent of all U.S.-based transactional home video spending goes towards physical media, compared to 64 percent in 2011. But the real surprise to me was to see how much digital media Microsoft is moving these days.

Microsoft made a significant showing in the area of internet VOD, which is industry slang for those 24 or 48 hour video rentals you can get from iTunes, Vudu and others. That segment currently accounts for just 12 percent of total video-on-demand revenue, with 72 percent of the money coming from rentals through pay TV operators. But it’s an interesting segment, in part because it’s not dominated by just one or two players.

Apple’s iTunes does have a strong lead with 45 percent of all internet VOD revenue, according to NPD, but there’s a fierce competition going on for second place: Amazon Instant Video generated 18 percent of the industry’s revenue in this segment in 2012, followed by Walmart’s Vudu with 15 percent and Xbox video with 14 percent.

59% Of All Android Tablet Usage Comes From The U.S., And The Forked Amazon Kindle Fire Is The Most Popular Brand

TechCrunch

Android tablets have nearly caught up to iPad devices as the world’s most popular tablet platform, and some project that they may even overtake iPads later this year. According to new research from app analytics company Localytics, the U.S., and specifically Amazon, should take the most credit for that trend: some 59% of all Android tablet usage came from the U.S., with over half of that attributed to Kindle Fire and Fire HD tablets, working out to a 33% share.

Trends emerge in app preferences of iPhone vs. Android users

Which web and mobile properties found the largest audiences in 2012? According to Nielsen, Americans on the web were most inclined to search, socialize, shop, browse or, of course, look things up on Wikipedia.

The two US sites that averaged the greatest number of monthly unique visitors were web giants Google and Facebook: the former averaged over 172 million monthly unique visitors, the latter close to 153 million. Large online media sites Yahoo! (#3) and AOL (#7), shopping juggernaut Amazon (#8) and search offerings from Microsoft (#6) and Ask.com (#10), all found their way into the top ten as well.

Apple, Facebook Data Center Spending To Cool In 2013

Investor’s Business Daily

Torrid spending by Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG), Amazon.com (AMZN), eBay (EBAY), Facebook (FB) and others on data centers packed with computer servers will cool off in 2013, says aUBS report.

Increased spending on data centers has given a lift to networking gear vendors such as Cisco Systems (CSCO), Juniper Networks (JNPR), F5 Networks (FFIV) and Riverbed Technology(RVBD), says UBS analyst Amitabh Passi in a preview of Q3 earnings. In the report, Passi says data center capital spending will rise only 3% in 2013, down from 37% this year.

UBS used data from company reports, FactSet and its own estimates to come up with its numbers.

“By 2016, IDC expects the total number of data centers in the U.S. will decline from 2.94 million in 2012 to 2.89 million. This decline will be concentrated in internal server rooms and closets, with a very small decline in midsize local data centers,” said the IDC report. “Despite the slight decline in total data centers, total data center space will increase significantly, growing from 611.4 million square feet in 2012 to more than 700 million square feet in 2016.”

Online Video Viewing Hits Record In August Of 188 Million Viewers, Ads Lag

MediaPost

The online video business might be enjoying a record number of viewers, but the number of ads seen hasn’t returned yet to the highs hit in the spring. In comScore’s just-released monthly report on video viewing, the measurement firm said a record 188 million Americans watched 37.7 billion online videos in August. That’s a rise from 184 million Americans checking out online videos in July.

The trouble is, the numbers of ads viewed in August was about the same as the month before, clocking in at 9.5 billion video ads, on par with July. The ads-viewed figure has not shot past its previous high of 11 billion in June, or even the 10 billion mark that it hit for the first time in May.

The top ten online video content properties for the month of August were Google-owned YouTube, Yahoo sites, Microsoft sites, Vevo, Facebook, AOL, Viacom Digital, NDN, Grab Media and Amazon sites. By ads viewed, the top properties were Google-owned YouTube, Brightroll, Adap.tv, Hulu, SpotXchange, TubeMogul, Tremor Video, Specific Media, Auditude and Videology.
