With buyout set, Dell needs to lay out PC strategy – Rivals HP and Lenovo could use market uncertainty to their advantage

Computerworld

Computerworld - Dell’s buyout deal should give the company renewed business flexibility and stealth, but its customers need to know if Dell will be in the PC market for the long haul.

“Now, Dell will be able to better compete with HP, Lenovo, IBM and Cisco,” said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy. “They can do what they want without the scrutiny of Wall Street and the SEC, and do it under the radar, making it harder for competitors to guess at Dell’s next moves and then making defensive moves to thwart them.”

However, whether Dell, the third-largest PC maker in the world, plans to continue to be a major player in the PC business is an open question. That question has customers – both enterprises and consumers – concerned.

“It’s too early to tell how much Dell wants to remain in PCs,” said Moorhead. “They could more easily reduce or exit the business as a private company… Dell customers, specifically business PC customers and channels, could be a little edgy until Dell announces it’s in the PC business for the long haul.”

Hewlett-Packard, which has been barely hanging on to its number one position in the PC market, used the news of Dell’s buyout announcement to take a jab at its competitor.

“Dell has a very tough road ahead,” HP said in a released statement. “The company faces an extended period of uncertainty and transition that will not be good for its customers. And with a significant debt load, Dell’s ability to invest in new products and services will be extremely limited. Leveraged buyouts tend to leave existing customers and innovation at the curb.”

Consumer Reports makes case for Windows 7 PCs

Consumer Reports makes case for Windows 7 PCs – May be smarter to search for new PC with older OS rather than deal with Windows 8
Computerworld (US)

FRAMINGHAM – Windows 7 may be the better choice as a PC operating system on new systems than the just-released Windows 8, Consumer Reports magazine said this week.

“Windows 7 generally received favorable reviews when it was released,” Consumer Reports’ Donna Tapellini said in a piece Tuesday on the consumer watchdog’s website. “[Three years] after its 2009 launch, there still haven’t been a lot of complaints. If you’ve been happy with Windows 7 and even Windows XP up until now, there’s no compelling reason to switch to Windows 8.”

Consumer Reports does not evaluate and rate operating systems, as it does, say, clothes washers, cars or even computers. Instead, it staked out its position this fall when it praised Windows 8 as great for tablets, but because of its split personality, not for everyone.

Research: What Media and Devices Motivate BtoB Tech Buyers

Business and IT professionals are taking to social, mobile, and video in a big way in the US. They have several favorite sources of information on tech products. These are some of the findings in a recent IDG Research Services survey of more than 2, 200 visitors to IDG sites such as CIO, Computerworld, InfoWorld, Network World, and PCWorld. Tech savvy users, across multiple segments from healthcare to finance and manufacturing to government, are key indicators for marketers as they plan to reach a broader business audience.

For 95% of BtoB tech buyers, the web is a constant source of tech-related videos: 82% of the respondents post, forward, and share such videos.  Many are not passive viewers, either.  Almost half purchased a product, nearly three-quarters research an item, and approximately half visited a vendor site, contacted a vendor for more information, or looked for a product in a retail store.
