IDC Forecasts Worldwide Semiconductor Revenues Will Grow 4.6% and Reach $315 Billion in 2012

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Semiconductor revenues worldwide will grow 4.6% in 2012 to $315 billion according to the mid-year 2012 update of the Semiconductor Applications Forecaster (SAF) from International Data Corporation (IDC). The SAF also forecasts that semiconductor revenues will grow 6.2% to $335 billion in 2013 and grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8% from 2011-2016, reaching $380 billion in 2016.

Retailers lead all verticals with social media investments

FRAMINGHAM, MA – IDC today announced the availability of a new study, 2012 U.S. Social Media Trends by Vertical(Document # 235591), that highlights the adoption of social media as an emerging technology across six major vertical markets including banking, government, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and utilities. Part of IDC’s annual vertical view survey, the unique study found that similar to Internet adoption in the 1990’s, B2C companies – especially retailers – are driving social media adoption while B2B companies lag behind. The report also found that social media is enabling organizations to increase productivity and improve knowledge sharing as they leverage social networks to share best practices and identify appropriate resources.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– Expectations of strong demand for media tablets in the second half of 2012 has led International Data Corporation (IDC) to increase its forecast for the worldwide market to 107.4 million units for the year, up from its previous forecast of 106.1 million units. In the latest forecast update of the Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, IDC also revised upward its 2013 forecast number from 137.4 million units to 142.8 million units. And by 2016 worldwide shipments should reach 222.1 million units.

Global economic woes slow IT spending

FRAMINGHAM – IT budgets are expected to increase an average of only 3 percent this year, down from 6 percent reported last year, according to CIO magazine’s latest Tech Poll of 200 IT leaders. The survey, conducted in April, showed that budget increases are in store for nearly half of CIOs, up from 32 percent roughly 9 months ago.  Just one in five CIOs anticipate IT budget cuts. There is also a big shift underway in terms of where IT spending is being targeted. CIOs are increasing spending on outsourced IT services, including cloud, plus  mobile/wireless and applications.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The worldwide mobile phone market is forecast to grow slightly more than 4.0% year over year in 2012, the lowestannual growth rate since 2009, due to a sharp decline in the feature phone market and sluggish global economic conditions. According to the International Data Corporation (IDCWorldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors will ship a total of nearly 1.8 billion mobile phones this year, compared to 1.7 billion units shipped in 2011. By the end of 2016, IDC forecasts 2.3 billion mobile phones will be shipped to the channel.

While overall SMB IT spending is forecast to grow at a rate of 5-6% per year over the forecast period, SMB spending on security products and solutions is expected to grow almost twice as fast.
