Another Sign Microsoft Surface Is Struggling

Mashable

The Surface was supposed to be Microsoft’s real answer to the iPad — a Windows-based tablet that would satisfy both casual users and digital workers. Now it looks like it’s appealing to neither.

UBS analyst Brent Thill estimates Microsoft has sold only 1 million Surface RT tablets, reported by Business Insider. He had previously estimated 2 million. To put those figures in perspective, Apple is estimated to sell in the neighborhood of 20 million iPads for the same period.

This is far from the first sign that the Surface isn’t doing very well. A month ago, brokerage firm Detwiler Fenton said Microsoft wouldn’t even break a million units, estimating sales for the quarter at 600,000 units maximum. However, that was before Microsoft expanded retail distribution of the Surface early, which likely led to better numbers.

In addition, last week Samsung said it was pulling back plans to release its own tablet based on Windows RT — the same operating system running on the Surface — citing customer ignorance about the pared-down version of Windows made to run on ARM-based devices. Cost was also a factor.

“We didn’t necessarily attain the price point that we hoped to attain,” Samsung senior vice president Mike Abary told CNET.

Looking at web usage, a study conducted by Chikita Insights just before the holidays found the Microsoft Surface accounted for just 0.22 ad impressions for every 100 impressions from an iPad. Finally, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in an interview last November that sales were “modest” (although Microsoft later said Ballmer was talking about supply and distribution of the Surface, not sales).

If the Surface RT is doing poorly, Microsoft’s hopes in the tablet space could be resurrected by the Surface Pro, a slightly larger version of the device that runs Windows 8 Pro. Microsoft has previously said the Pro version would launch three months after the Surface RT, or about the end of January.

Why do you think the Surface is struggling, and do you think the Surface Pro will turn things around? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung Dethrones Nokia as Top Cellphone Brand in 2012, Beats Apple

Mashable

Samsung has ended Nokia‘s 14-year reign, dethroning the Finnish company to become the top cellphone brand in 2012, according to a new report.

The Korean electronics giant is expected to capture 29% of worldwide cellphone shipments; that’s up from 24% last year, the IHS iSuppli Mobile and Wireless Communications Service said in a release. In comparison, Nokia’s market share will fall to 24% from 30% last year, the research firm added.

Trailing in third place is Apple, which is predicted to take 10% of shipments (up from 7% in 2011). ZTE follows in fourth place with 6%, remaining steady since last year, while LG ends up in fifth place with 4% (down from 6%).

As last year’s runner-up, Samsung edged out previous incumbent Nokia, which held the top spot since 1998. It’s the first time that the Korean company will reign supreme “on a yearly basis,” IHS said.

Samsung’s success is due to its ability to appeal to a wide range of consumers by offering a variety of phones.

“The company produces dozens of new smartphone models every year that address all segments of the market, from the high end to the low end,” IHS explained. “Samsung monitors the big trends in smartphone design, user needs and unmet market opportunities, then creates products to fit those markets quickly and efficiently.”

Samsung also boasts the best performance among smartphone brands, with its share of global smartphone shipments jumping to 28% from 20% last year. Nokia, in third place, suffers the biggest loss here, with its share plunging to 5% from 16%. Apple sits in second place, followed by HTC and RIM in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Nokia is struggling to transition from its older Symbian-based phones to its newer Windows 7-based handsets, The result has been declining shipments, with the Windows phones failing to make up for sluggish sales of the Symbian phones, IHS said.

In general, global smartphone shipments are set to increase by 35.5% this year, while overall cellphone shipments will only rise by 1%.

11 Big Tech Trends You’ll See in 2013

Mashable

Writing prediction pieces is a funny thing because there is really no such thing as “next year.” Time is a continuum, and the calendar is a human construct designed to help us keep organized. Things that will happen “next year” are already happening now, we may simply not take note of them until the sun rises and sets dozens and dozens of times.

So as I look to 2013, I realize that much of which I expect to see in the coming 12-to-14 months has been quietly (or not so quietly) developing for months, even years. From my point of view, it’s unlikely 2013 will contain any revolutionary or ground-breaking advancements in technology, social media or even the nexus of the two. Believe me, I want breakthroughs. But in order for them to be such, they have to be things I’ve never seen before, which means I have little chance of predicting them. Let’s be honest, I’m no Nostradamus.

Referrals to Facebook Spike 1000% After Twitter Cuts Off LinkedIn [CHART]

Mashable

After severing ties with LinkedIn, Twitter inadvertently helped opponent Facebook snag 1000% more page referrals from the professional social network. PageLever, an analytics tool for Facebook pages, points to Twitter’s June 29 decision to stop syncing updates with LinkedIn as an explanation for the spike. “The spike happened because without Twitter, there is now a significantly lower volume of content in the LinkedIn News Feed, and therefore less competition for clicks and attention,” Brendan Irvine-Broque, PageLever’s director of growth, tellsMashable in an email. “So any non-Twitter content (including links to Facebook Pages and Page Posts) is performing much better than before.”

6 Habits of Highly Effective Mobile Marketers

Mashable

If you believe experts like Mary Meeker, mobile advertising is getting hotter every day, but a true revolution is still a ways off. The dollars spent on mobile marketing do not come close to lining up with the amount of time we spend with our devices, and “traditional” media like print and broadcast still attract the lion’s share of spending. In other words, we’ve had our mobile advertising “big bang,” but we haven’t yet fully adapted to life in our brand-new universe.

Online Advertising Revenue Sets Record High in First Quarter

Mashable

U.S. online advertising brought in $8.4 billion over the first three months of the year, the best first quarter the industry has recorded to date. According to a joint report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), online advertising grew by $1.1 billion, or about 15%, in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the first quarter of 2012. That’s strong growth, but less than the 24% jump in revenue between Q1 2010 and Q1 2011. Separate studies suggest that mobile, social and video are driving the growth.

7 Key Tips for Leveraging Big Data

Mashable

A CEO of a top social and mobile game publisher, recently commented: “When you’re learning how to ski, you learn pretty quickly that whatever direction you’re looking is the direction your skis ultimately will take you down the mountain. The same holds true for data: You really need to make sure the metrics you are looking at from the start are the ones that are most important to your business’ success. That is inevitably where your business will focus.” That seems like a simple concept, but it’s also incredibly insightful, particularly when it comes to big data.
