Gartner Says Mobile Device Management Is Essential for IT Success

Gartner Press Release

Analysts Discuss Mobile Device Management at Gartner IT Infrastructure & Operations Management Summit 2012, June 5-7, in Orlando and June 12-13 in Frankfurt, Germany Mobile device management (MDM) has become a crucial discipline for IT departments, given the increasing number of smartphones and media tablets used within organizations, according to Gartner, Inc.

“The era of fully supporting company-owned devices is giving way to an era of managed diversity in which tiered support for employee-owned, consumer-class devices is the norm,” said Terrence Cosgrove, research director at Gartner. “With the unabated growth of consumerization, IT leaders need to implement MDM to manage corporate- and employee-owned devices, and assign responsibilities inside IT departments for the service, application and security of all these devices.”

Worldwide Semiconductor Market Grew 24% in 2010 to $283 Billion — IDC Expects 6-8% Revenue Growth in 2011

IDC News Release, 4/20/11

Worldwide semiconductor revenues increased more than 24% year over year to $282 billion in 2010, according to the latest version of the International Data Corporation (IDC) Semiconductor Application Forecaster (SAF). The industry recovery was strong and broad last year across all market verticals, regions, and semiconductor device categories. Device applications, such as smartphones, media tablets and e-readers, automotive infotainment, notebook PCs, datacenter servers, and wireless and wired communication infrastructure, drove robust consumption of semiconductors. IDC’s SAF tracks more than 100 semiconductor companies, most of which experienced strong growth in 2010.

Intel, with total semiconductor revenues of $41.9 billion in 2010, once again was the overall market leader. Samsung was the number 2 vendor overall with revenues of $27.6 billion, which increased its semiconductor revenue market share by 2% over 2009. Rounding out the top 5 chip suppliers were Texas Instruments, Toshiba, and Hynix. Renesas Electronics, the merged company of Renesas and NEC, was the number 6 vendor overall, just missing the top 5. Together, the top 10 vendors represented 51% of the overall market revenues, an increase of 6% over 2009.

Gartner Says There's No Reason to Delay, CIOs Should Be Experimenting With Media Tablets in Business

Special Report Provides Advice on Best Practices for Business Uses of iPad and Other Media Tablets

Press Release, 4/5/11

Media tablets are presenting a variety of new opportunities for businesses, but they are also requiring a new set of policies, technologies and skills for enterprises, according to Gartner, Inc.

“CIOs are determined not to make the same mistakes they made with smartphones, which were often written off early as expensive and frivolous toys, or executive status symbols — which then left room for more inventive leaders who saw the competitive advantage that mobile applications would bring,” said David Willis, research vice president at Gartner. “They are also more willing to see that they don’t need to supply and manage every device that employees use at work: Consumerization is here to stay, and moving very fast. If you can think of an application for tablets, your competition may well be thinking in the same way — and acting on it. It is time to explore the use of media tablets in business.”

Market for Media Tablet and eReader Semiconductors Explodes in 2010 and Will Only Keep Growing, According to IDC

Semiconductors empower Media Tablets and eReaders as content consumption truly goes mobile, providing OEMs and consumers with intelligence, storage, connectivity, and software

Press Release, 4/5/111

SAN MATEO, Calif., April 5, 2011 – Worldwide revenues for Media Tablet and eReader semiconductors grew over 2,000% to $3.3 billion in 2010 as semiconductor suppliers enabled original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring new products to market less than 8 months after the iPad launched, according to the latest consumer semiconductor study from International Data Corporation (IDC). With the arrival of Android Honeycomb, dual core processors, and increased bandwidth, IDC expects Media Tablet and eReader semiconductor revenues to grow by 120% year over year in 2011.

“The opportunity for semiconductors in Media Tablets and eReaders has exploded and semiconductor suppliers are scrambling to bring to market semiconductor and software platforms to enable these products,” said Michael J. Palma, research manager for Consumer Semiconductor research at IDC. “Beyond semiconductors, these suppliers are also providing OEMs with much of the system software as well as support for access into app stores, which is helping to dramatically shorten product design cycles.”

Nearly 18 Million Media Tablets Shipped in 2010 with Apple Capturing 83% Share; eReader Shipments Quadrupled to More Than 12 Million, According to IDC

IDC Press Release, 3/10/11

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010 (4Q10) – more than double the 4.5 million shipped in the third quarter. Apple’s share came down from 93% in 3Q10 to 73% in 4Q10, but still reflected Apple’s strong leadership position. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was the primary competitor in the holiday season, beating other players to market and capturing more than 17% share, while a number of smaller regional players also participated.

The Tracker showed that the eReader market also picked up significantly in the fourth quarter. Strong sales of Amazon’s Kindle, which was refreshed in August and priced more aggressively, as well as significant gains from competitors such as Pandigital, Barnes & Noble, Hanvon, and Sony among others, contributed to market growth.

In 4Q10, the eReader market more than doubled volume from the previous quarter, with more than 6 million units shipped for the quarter, bringing the full-year total to 12.8 million units shipped. eReader shipments were also up more than 325% from 2009 when roughly 3 million units shipped. The strong growth reflects a more competitive offering as well as widening interest in the category, including a boost from media tablet press and much lower pricing.
