Did you know that almost three-quarters (71 percent) of internet users are more likely to purchase from a brand that they are following on a social networking site such as Twitter or Facebook?

Indeed, social media now accounts for almost one-quarter (22.5 percent) of all time that U.S. citizens spend online, and this weight of activity transcends down to all levels – an incredible 91 percent of searchers say that they use Facebook to find local businesses online.

Pew Study Looks At Photo, Video Sharing Habits

There’s a lot of pressure on journalists and news organizations to be everywhere, not just when it comes to feet on the ground reporting but also when it comes to tweets, pins, posts, etc. on all form of social media.
We’ve even encouraged the trend with tips to maximize your presence on everything from Google+ to Pinterest. Which is why this Pew Internet & American Life Project’s study about how photos and videos are shared socially caught my eye. Their findings shed some interesting light on how many (or few) people are actually using these various networks. (This wasn’t the focus of the study but looked interesting, so I created this graph.)

USA Today Launching Digital, Print Redesign

Gannett’s flagship newspaper, USA Today, announced today it’s relaunching its brand identity, and with it a redesigned paper (starting Friday) and website (starting this weekend). The redesign comes on the heels of the paper’s 30th anniversary — the colorful, graphic-heavy paper launched Sept. 15, 1982.

60% Of People Find Tech Stressful (But Social Media Annoys Less Than 1 In 10) [STUDY]

Technology was, of course, supposed to make our lives easier. And it has, in many ways – certainly nobody wants to go back to a time before washing machines, ovens, refrigerators and air conditioning. But what about modern tech? Well, according to a new study, six out of ten people believe find technology stressful, and just 15.7 percent say that they aren’t stressed by technology at all. The worst offender was wi-fi (likely when hearing others pronounce it ‘wiffy’), which 12.4 percent of respondents said raised their blood pressure, ahead of the cloud (11.4 percent), and home networking/syncing (10 percent).

62% Of Adults Worldwide Now Use Social Media (But Email Is Still More Popular) [STUDY]

More than six in ten (62 percent) online citizens around the world use the internet for social networking, reveals a new study from independent market research company Ipsos. Social media is most popular in Indonesia, where 83 percent engage, ahead of Argentina (76 percent) and Russia (75 percent).

Microsoft Launches Social Media Trend-watcher, msnNOW

Microsoft launched its foray into social and search-powered news aggregation, msnNOW. According to the site’s description, “msnNOW is a new way to stay current on the trends people are talking about, searching for, and sharing the most.”

The site uses realtime data from Twitter updates, Facebook posts, YouTube activity, Breaking News and Bing searches to find patterns and tally what’s trending.  Top stories are featured in a slider, and the rest of the stories are shown in a grid-like display (thinkNewser, but cleaner) in reverse chronological order.

Twitter Tops Social Media Buzz List

Zeta Interactive, a digital marketing agency, recently released its annual rankings of social networks. They are categorized by “buzz,” a ranking calculated by volume and tone (percent positive ranking) of all the sites.

This year, Twitter topped the list followed by LinkedInYouTube and FacebookGoogle+ did not make the top 10, partially due to its June launch—data starting from January 2011 was used to calculate the scores.

Google To Integrate Journalists’ Google+ Profiles Into Google News

Users of Google News will soon be able to find their favorite journalists on Google+ more easily. That’s because Google will soon begin to integrate the Google+ profiles of journalists with their bylines on Google News.

Journalists who have a lead story will get their Google+ profile picture prominently featured to the right of their story, along with a count of how many people circle that person. Most importantly, Google+ users will be able to add that person to their circle directly from Google News.
