Infographic: Emerging Markets Mobile Attitudes

Upstream

The 2013 Emerging Markets Mobile Attitudes Report from marketing technology company Upstream, which commissioned YouGov and Vanson Bourne to poll the views of a representative sample of 3,670 adults in Brazil, India, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, revealed that while Apple’s success in the West has been predominately shaped by its premium brand status, the door is open for others such as Nokia to stake its claim on the emerging market audience.

The report reveals that Apple (21 per cent) only secures third place on emerging market consumers’ wish lists – after Samsung (32 per cent) and Nokia (22 per cent). Despite its recent decline in Western markets, Nokia has been named the brand most Nigerians would like to own (37 per cent), and second favourite in Brazil after Samsung. While an appetite for high-end smartphone devices exists throughout emerging markets – 16 per cent willing to spend more than $450 on a device – the report finds that brand desirability cannot guarantee success in these new markets. The report reveals that almost a third of consumers (27 per cent) with less purchasing power will ultimately bypass their favourite brands and buy devices with similar functionality, but at a cheaper price.

Samsung Is The Giant, Fast-Growing Tech Company You’re Not Paying Enough Attention To

Business Insider

SEOUL (Reuters) – Samsung Electronics, the world leader in mobiles and memory chips, likely earned a quarterly profit of $8.1 billion, as it sold close to 500 handsets every minute and as demand picked up for the flat screens it makes for mobile devices, including those for rival Apple Inc products.

That run of five straight record quarters may end in January-March on weak seasonal demand, though a strong pipeline of smartphones – the South Korean group’s biggest earner – and improving chip prices have eased concerns that earnings  growth could slow this year, powering Samsung shares to record levels.

While Apple rolled out just a single new smartphone, the iPhone 5, last year globally, Samsung bombarded the market with 37 variants tweaked for regional and consumer tastes, from high-end smartphones to cheaper low-end models. By comparison, Taiwan’s HTC Corp released 18 models, Nokia 9 and LG Electronics 24.

Samsung Dethrones Nokia as Top Cellphone Brand in 2012, Beats Apple

Mashable

Samsung has ended Nokia‘s 14-year reign, dethroning the Finnish company to become the top cellphone brand in 2012, according to a new report.

The Korean electronics giant is expected to capture 29% of worldwide cellphone shipments; that’s up from 24% last year, the IHS iSuppli Mobile and Wireless Communications Service said in a release. In comparison, Nokia’s market share will fall to 24% from 30% last year, the research firm added.

Trailing in third place is Apple, which is predicted to take 10% of shipments (up from 7% in 2011). ZTE follows in fourth place with 6%, remaining steady since last year, while LG ends up in fifth place with 4% (down from 6%).

As last year’s runner-up, Samsung edged out previous incumbent Nokia, which held the top spot since 1998. It’s the first time that the Korean company will reign supreme “on a yearly basis,” IHS said.

Samsung’s success is due to its ability to appeal to a wide range of consumers by offering a variety of phones.

“The company produces dozens of new smartphone models every year that address all segments of the market, from the high end to the low end,” IHS explained. “Samsung monitors the big trends in smartphone design, user needs and unmet market opportunities, then creates products to fit those markets quickly and efficiently.”

Samsung also boasts the best performance among smartphone brands, with its share of global smartphone shipments jumping to 28% from 20% last year. Nokia, in third place, suffers the biggest loss here, with its share plunging to 5% from 16%. Apple sits in second place, followed by HTC and RIM in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Nokia is struggling to transition from its older Symbian-based phones to its newer Windows 7-based handsets, The result has been declining shipments, with the Windows phones failing to make up for sluggish sales of the Symbian phones, IHS said.

In general, global smartphone shipments are set to increase by 35.5% this year, while overall cellphone shipments will only rise by 1%.

Ad Execs See Opportunity In iPhone 5

MediaPost

The subject of endless speculation finally arrived Wednesday with the unveiling of the iPhone 5 at a ritual Apple event in San Francisco, led by CEO Tim Cook. As expected, the company rolled out its signature device with a larger display, improved camera and 4G LTE networking all wrapped in a thinner body of aluminum and glass.
Given the months of rumors and leaks ricocheting around the blogosphere leading up to today, there were few surprises left as to what the latest iPhone would offer. There was no novel addition like Siri in the iPhone 4S or controversial new design feature like the external antenna. Still, digital ad executives and analysts expect the iPhone to lure new customers and provide a richer canvas for mobile campaigns and m-commerce. Forrester analyst Charles Golvin noted that competitors like HTC and Nokia already offer some of the features Apple debuted Wednesday, like those for imaging. “But Apple still outpaces the competition when it comes to the entire package — the new iPhone unites significant improvements in industrial design, imaging, audio and connectivity, along with the wealth of new capabilities that iOS6 enables,” he wrote in a blog post today.

IDC Press Release

FRAMINGHAM  – The worldwide mobile phone market declined 1.5% year over year in the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12), as Samsung ousted longtime leader Nokia to become the world’s top mobile phone vendor. According to the International Data Corporation (IDCWorldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 398.4 million units in 1Q12 compared to 404.3 million units in the first quarter of 2011.

Nokia has been the global market leader in total mobile phone shipments since the inception of IDC’s Mobile Phone Tracker in 2004. Samsung’s ascension to the market’s top spot is largely a reflection of its gains in the smartphone market over the past two years. “The halcyon days of rapid growth in the smartphone market have been good to Samsung,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker program. “Samsung has used its established relationships with carriers in a mix of economically diverse markets to gain share organically and at the expense of former high fliers such as Nokia.”
