Harvard Business Review/SAP

Innovative mobile technologies improve lives and society in both developed and developing economies.

WHEN ANALYSTS FOR the World Bank early in 2012 calculated the global growth in mobile technology between 2005 and 2010, the results were staggering. Taking into account seven indicators—from coverage available and subscriptions per capita to mobile broadband sub¬scriptions and mobile Internet use (not just cellular use)—its July 2012 Maximizing Mobile report calculated a 30 percent increase in availability and usage.

Significantly, the report noted that growth was not limited to just a few regions. In 2000, according to the World Bank, there were 700 million mobile subscriptions, 71 percent of them in high-income countries and 29 percent in developing countries. Figure 1

By 2010, there were 5.9 billion mobile subscriptions, 23 percent in high-income countries, and 77 percent in developing countries.

And when IDG Global Solutions measured worldwide usage of emerging technologies earlier this year, such as location-based offers and contactless transactions (in which a card is waved near a receiver, rather than run through a reader), it also found mostly moderate dif¬ferences in the penetration among North America, Europe, and other regions. Figure 2.

cmo.com

Big Data is a popular term today that references the huge volumes of business and consumer data being collected and stored by organizations, which cannot be effectively data mined due to the limitations of commonly used software tools that capture, manage, or process the data. While first diagnosed in the science, government, healthcare and military industries, the vast volumes of consumer data being produced through social technologies has landed this reality – and this problem – on the desks of CMOs globally.

Not only is data being produced at lighting speeds, the devices used to produce, broadcast, measure, store and share that data are on the rise, which then fuels further content generation. The cycle is creating a Big Data cyclone that organizations will continue to struggle with.

The world’s technological per capita capacity to store information has doubled every 3 years since the 1980s. Today, 2.5 quintillion bytes of data is produced daily. To seize the opportunity, firms like Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, and SAP have spent $15+ billion on software firms that only specialize in data management and analytics.

SAP is known worldwide for its business and analytics applications. It has more than 170,000 customers and more than two million members of its social network, the SAP Community Network (SCN), which was created as a way to disseminate information.

About a year ago, hoping to boost its overall thought leadership and turn some of its SCN members into warm leads, the SAP marketing team launched a series of webinars using ON24 as its technology platform. The first webcast, which focused primarily on the North American and EMEA markets, took about six weeks of planning. It went live in March 2011.

The combined company will be one of the industry’s largest ERP vendors after SAP and Oracle

IDG News Service (Boston Bureau), 4/26/11

Lawson Software has agreed to be purchased by an Infor affiliate GGC Software Holdings for roughly US$2 billion, the company announced Tuesday.

The deal will create one of the industry’s largest ERP (enterprise resource planning) software vendors after SAP and Oracle, and is expected to close in the third calendar quarter of this year.

The announcement comes about six weeks after Infor first made an unsolicited offerfor Lawson, which is known for its strong presence in verticals such as health care.

While many observers expected counteroffers from the likes of Oracle to emerge, none did publicly.

Wall Street Journal, 3/10/11

Werner Brandt, chief financial officer of business software concern SAP AG, says big deals are back.

“Very large transactions have come back,” Mr. Brandt said on Thursday. “That happened towards the end of 2010 and we see that continuing.”

Speaking at a UBS technology conference in London, Mr. Brandt said SAP’s customers were reluctant to invest in 2009 and early 2010 during the financial crisis, but that changed in the middle of last year.
